Psychology and Computers

Some people see computers and psychology as two distinct fields with little in common. The most popular view is that computer science is an extremely rigorous and quantitative research culture while psychological research is based on more qualitative research into human behavior and perception.

But in fact, a lot of modern computer science is influenced by psychological principles. Computer scientists and psychologists collaborate to develop technology interfaces. This includes everything from car dashboards to cockpits, computer operating systems to game controllers. Also, a large portion of psychology research is highly statistical and requires sophisticated software to process huge data sets.

Psychologists are increasingly utilizing technology to expand their reach. The traditional methods of research in psychology, which are based on examining one aspect of behavior in the confines of a controlled environment, or assessing broader patterns of behavior through self-report questionnaires or interviews have inherent limitations. (Experiments are typically limited to a single experiment long-term www.rebootdata.net studies are not often conducted due to the difficulty of collecting and analyzing large amounts of data.)

Computer technology has provided new avenues to study the behavior of individuals. Computers are essential for the brain-imaging technology known as fMRI. Researchers can identify specific brain regions to cognitive processes like memory or reading. EEG (electroencephalography) is another example of a technology that uses computer processing to record and analyze brain activity.

The CCBT method is now accepted by the UK’s National Health Service as an effective treatment for mild to moderate depression and anxiety. Artificial intelligence (AI) is poised to revolutionize the practice of psychotherapy by replacing the therapist with robots that are able to evaluate and treat patients online.
